Ratings Recap: ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ Outperforms ‘SVU’ In Its Premiere, All But ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ And The CW Down

(for Wednesday, September 29, 2010) Virtually everyone was down last night, except for The CW and ‘Hell’s Kitchen.’ ABC’s returning comedies are still above their spring averages, while NBC’s ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ debuted very well.

CBS (3.2/9, 12.317 million) was well above the competition, thanks to ‘Survivor,’ ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘The Defenders,’ despite declines in all of them. ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ gave FOX (2.9/9, 6.308 million) second in the advertiser valued Adults 18-49 demo, though it came in behind both NBC (2.5/7, 8.95 million) and ABC (2.4/7, 8.331 million) in total viewers. The CW (1.1/3, 2.582 million) was consistent and in respectable shape thanks to stability from ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Hellcats.’

The Whole Truth, “Thicker Than Water”

'The Whole Truth' - 'Thicker Than Water'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: ABC

I’ve discovered a flaw with the otherwise clever format of this show. The conceit is that we don’t know if the client is guilty or innocent until the very end, and we get to follow both the prosecution and the defense. The problem is this kind of paints the prosecution as witch hunters. We want to root for the underdog, but as we saw this week, when the prosecution is going after someone who may be innocent, Kathryn just looks mean. I get that it’s her job, but she seems to relish in it a bit much for comfort.

Terriers, “Fustercluck”

'Terriers' - 'Fustercluck'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 4
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: FX

Now ‘Terriers’ is starting to look like a classic FX show. The addition of Hank’s sister Steph (played cleverly enough by Donal Logue’s sister Karina) adds a whole new dynamic to the show. It also left us with one intriguing cliffhanger for future installments. But, and I’m so thrilled to say it, things just got real interesting.

The Defenders, “Las Vegas v. Reid”

'The Defenders' - 'Las Vegas v. Reid'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: CBS

I like these guys. Pete Kaczmarek is flashy and in your face, while Nick Morelli is compassionate and passionate. And they’re both effective lawyers, though we’ve only seen Morelli really shine in the courtroom so far. Pete’s case was settled out of court, though well-handled for his client, while Nick took over a case that was tried and lost already, but mishandled by an inept defense attorney.

Cougar Town, “Let Yourself Go”

'Cougar Town' - 'Let Yourself Go'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (9:30 PM)
Network: ABC

At this point the relationships almost don’t matter anymore on ‘Cougar Town.’ What we have is a group of friends who like to hang out. In fact, other than Travis, who’s off to college and always on the fringe anyway, you have a six person dynamic just like NBC and the blockbuster ‘Friends.’ Only most of these people are a little older. In fact, one of them is a ‘Friend,’ so those fans should probably go ahead and tune in.

Modern Family, “The Kiss”

'Modern Family' - 'The Kiss'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: ABC

Jay’s an old-school dad, and thus affection isn’t something he’s comfortable with. But as a resul of this, at least partially, Mitchell and Claire are both a little uptight as well. Mitchell’s so uptight about it, it bothers Cam. And the fact that they’ve never kissed on the show apparently bothered viewers as well, as it was a hot topic over the summer. The writers have apparently decided to address it by building up to it. First, get Jay to awkwardly offer affection to his children. It’s trickle down affection!

Better With You, “Better With Firehouse”

'Better With You' - 'Better With Firehouse'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (8:30 PM)
Network: ABC

I’m thinking either someone sat down with Jake Lacy between the filming of the pilot and this episode, or they just sent him to acting class. Everything about his performance as Casey that drove me crazy last week was far more subdued this time around and I found myself actually liking his character a little bit.

Undercovers, “Instructions”

'Undercovers' - 'Instructions'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: NBC

I am so on the fence with this show right now. I was hoping this episode would push me one way or the other, but it just left me there … hanging. Leo Nash becomes an official part of “Team Bloom” and he’s such an over-the-top blabbermouth that he’s become an absolute blast to watch. Then you have Hoyt, who’s starstruck and eager to impress, creating an instant four-way dynamic that is wholly unique to procedural/action television. But I need a few more threads to the secrets behind the spies.

Survivor: Nicaragua, “Glitter in Their Eyes”

Network: CBS

Naonka got hood, but not ghetto, over a clue in a basket of fruit, which may be enough to put her on the outs within her own tribe. I understand the importance of the clue, but smashing bananas and knocking down another player to get to it is a bit much. Especially this early in the game. She’d better hope she finds it sooner, or finds a way to make people forget.

The Middle, “Homecoming”

'The Middle' - 'Homecoming'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 2
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 29, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: ABC

So, this week we got to see how good Sue might actually be at cross country. Could she prove herself a super-speedster like the mom on ‘No Ordinary Family’? If Frankie wanted to have it all, she was going to have to do some super speed of her own, as with Axl on the varsity team this year, she was going to be in two places at once to make it to Homecoming and Sue’s first meet. A meet apparently being held deep in the backwoods somewhere.

Ratings Recap: Britney Brings ‘Glee’ Its Best Ratings Yet, ‘No Ordinary Family’ Off to Solid Start

(for Tuesday, September 28, 2010) ‘The Good Wife’ premiered and it’s as if she never left, while new superhero drama ‘No Ordinary Family’ is off to a good start for ABC. ‘Glee’ hit a new series high with their Britney Spears episode, while later in the night, ‘Running Wilde’ is tanking fast, but perhaps not as fast as ‘Parenthood’ over on NBC.

Thanks to a ‘Glee’-tastic night, FOX (4.2/12, 9.684 million) had a commanding lead in the advertiser-valued Adults 18-49 demographic, while CBS (3.4/9, 16.027 million) rode the power of ‘NCIS’ to the viewers crown. ABC (3.0.8, 12.267 million) with ‘Family’ and ‘Dancing With the Stars’  was next, leaving NBC (2.5/7, 6.372 million) and a deflated ‘Biggest Loser’ to wallow in fourth place. The CW (0.9/2, 1.698 million) just missed a 1.0 in the demo.

Sons of Anarchy, “Home”

'Sons of Anarchy' - 'Home'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 4
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: FX

Hal Holbrook, as Gemma’s father, was just heartbreakingly good in this. Still reeling from what he did with Tig, he was brilliant as a man who knows he’s slipping, but still isn’t ready to accept it completely and have to move into a home. “Take me home,” he pleads with his daughter, and we were all there crying with her. Then to add to that heartache, Gemma decided to get home herself to see her own family. Only …

Parenthood, “I’m Cooler Than You Think”

'Parenthood' - 'I'm Cooler Than You Think'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 3
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: NBC

It was good to see Crosby standing up for himself with Renee, Jasmine’s mother. Sure, he agreed that Jabbar would be better off living at Renee’s house while Jasmine was touring in Europe, but that doesn’t mean he should be treated as a child or some kind of deadbeat dad. Jasmine’s father may have left, but Crosby never did. Renee could have some residual resentment because of the lie Jasmine told in the beginning; that he had run away. Truth is he never knew about Jabbar, and from the moment he found out, he’s been committed to the kid. It’s admirable.

Running Wilde, “Into the Wilde”

'Running Wilde' - 'Into the Wilde'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:30 PM)
Network: FOX

There are sparks of how this could be a great comedy, but it’s just not coming together quite yet. The chemistry between Steve and Emmy isn’t there yet, and Puddle kind of became inconsequential in a hurry this week. As the narrator, I kind of want her more in the middle of things, but Andy (David Cross) was very funny in his interactions with Steve, as well as his brilliant plant to “kidnap” Steve for ransom money.

Stargate Universe, “Intervention, Part 3″ [season premiere]

Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: Syfy

Picking up exactly where we left off from the two-part season finale, there’s a lot going on, and a lot of subtle surprises and twists and turns. But wait, we didn’t leave with TJ back on that planet where they left Cain and a bunch of other survivors, you say. Yeah, what is up with that?
