Ratings Recap: ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Fairly Steady, ‘Nikita’ Solid, NFL Dominant

'NFL Football' - 'Vikings @ Saints'(for Thursday, September 9, 2010) Brett Favre against the reigning Super Bowl champs was enough to elevate the NFL to a 13-year high in opening games, while catapulting NBC to a ridiculously dominant lead on the night. The strength of the game hit across the schedule, denting the ratings averages of several shows, but ‘Big Brother’ proved resilient, and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ premiere came in with ratings almost identical to how it left us last season. Out of that, ‘Nikita’ was just as solid, so it’s a good start for The CW’s New Thursday.

Rookie Blue, “Takedown” [season finale]

'Rookie Blue' - 'Takedown'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 13
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 9, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: ABC

Cop uniforms aren’t sexy. Missy Peregrym is. It was only a matter of time before the producers of this show got her into much less clothing so her assets could be appreciated. Historically, this has helped in the ratings, as ‘Ghost Whisperer’ found itself doing much better as soon as Jennifer Love Hewitt started wearing lower cut tops all the time, and skimpier sleepwear. I’m not saying I think it would serve the show best to have Andy running around in a bra or bikini all the time, but the show has elements of soap opera and sex, and sex appeal is a part of that, so why not work with what you have if you have someone as beautiful as Peregrym as your lead? As for the episode, I went into this finale with a sense of foreboding. Would this be that kind of show?

Rookie Blue, “In Blue”

'Rookie Blue' - 'In Blue'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 12
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 9, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: ABC

It’s kind of weird that the penultimate episode of the already-renewed ‘Rookie Blue’ felt like a perfect season finale. It was evaluation time for the rookies, so it was time to see who was going to make the grade and who was going to flush out. What do you do next? Luckily, we don’t have to wait that long, as the finale aired right after this. Maybe, since they knew early on they were getting renewed, they’re going to set up a nasty cliffhanger. But before we go there, we have to get through this one, which left us on a mostly positive note.

Nikita, “Pilot” [series premiere]

'Nikita' - 'Pilot'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 9, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: The CW

With all the elements of cheesecake and espionage-based action I expected going into it, ‘Nikita’ still managed to surprise me with the depth of its story. Nikita (Maggie Q, ‘Mission: Impossible III,’ ‘Live Free or Die Hard’) manages to be both the suave and capable lead and the drop-dead bombshell that can perfectly fill out a red swimsuit, black bra and panties and a stunning cocktail dress. All that without breaking a sweat. I wasn’t too familiar with Q’s body of work prior to this, but she proved herself very capable of playing cold, manipulative bitch on a mission. The mission itself may prove impossible, but it should make for a great thrill ride.

Williams (of the ‘All the Rage Podcast’ fame) and Jesse Miller (EIC of 8DaysAGeek.com) for the official site podcast of 8 Days a Geek. This week, Sam Briggs stopped by as well for some tech talk, and then we got our geek on about the big ‘Dark Tower’ announcement.

Check it out at 8 Days a Geek (and you might as well listen to the prior one as well which went way off the rails… you know you want to!):

The Vampire Diaries, “The Return” [season premiere]

'The Vampire Diaries' - 'The Return'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 9, 2010 (8 PM ET)
Network: The CW

I wonder if Nina Dobrev gets two paychecks for her work this season. As we saw last time, the infamous Katherine has returned, and looking just like Elena she is certain to cause all sorts of havoc. First up, apparently, is undoing all the work that Stefan and Elena have done in bringing out a slightly more human in Damon. Sure, he’s spent 145 years wallowing in depravity, violence and soulless evil behavior, but he’s turned over a new leaf, right? He has feelings for Elena, now. The important part of that statement is that he has feelings. For Elena is a bit of a problem.
