Ratings Recap: ‘Stand Up to Cancer’ Brings Down Individual Network Ratings

'Stand Up to Cancer'(for Friday, September 10, 2010) ‘Stand Up to Cancer’ brought in a solid performance on the night, but split across four networks, each of them did rather disappointingly, and the doldrums spread into the 9 PM ET hour as well, bringing down their averages for the whole night. Only The CW had gains, as they aired encore performances of two of their series premieres this week: ‘Nikita’ and ‘Hellcats.’ I’ll bet the network is enjoying being in the middle of the ratings mix, instead of in a distant last place. They’d better enjoy it now, because in a couple weeks it’ll be back to the cellar for them, most likely.

'The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town' - Dead Man Walking'Identifier: Mini-Series, Episode 8
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 10, 2010 (10:30 PM ET)

With Crim sentenced to death, can anything save him? Will Ricky and Marnie arrive at the execution site? Did the new Mayor killer her husband to assume power? Was it someone else? Will Death get Rickey? Will Buttonhole die? These questions and many more will be answered on this final episode of ‘Death Comes to Town.’ With a lot of elements reminiscent of the classic ‘Soap’ sitcom of the late ’70s and early ’80s, The Kids in the Hall mini-series murder mystery epic came to a very satisfying conclusion.

The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town, “Seriously Shocking News”

'The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town' - 'Seriously Shocking News'Identifier: Mini-Series, Episode 7
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 10, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: IFC

I’m still surprised just how well this is working. The Kids in the Hall are primarily known for their short-form work in sketch comedy, and yet they’ve handled this longer mini-series format just fine. They’ve always done well at creating memorable characters, and ‘Death Comes to Town’ is certainly filled with those, but they’ve even concocted a clever mystery. This time around, we finally learned the whole truth about Ricky’s life, and he came one stop closer to solving the mystery of who really killed the mayor. Meanwhile, the case is over. Is Crim guilty?

Haven, “As You Were”

'Haven' - 'As You Were'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 9
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 10, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: Syfy

Maybe, just maybe, we’re going to get an answer as to who “The Colorado Kid” is in this series. That’s more than we got in the book! At the core of this otherwise “monster-of-the-week” series is the mystery of the woman in the photo who looks just like Audrey. We’ve gotten morsels of information about her, and as we’ve come to expect in small town settings, the locals are holding onto as many secrets as they’re revealing. But before Audrey uncovered one of those secrets, we had to sing “Ten Little Indians…”

Eureka, “I’ll Be Seeing You” [mid-season finale]

'Eureka' - 'I'll Be Seeing You'Identifier: Season 4, Episode 9
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 10, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: Syfy

One episode shy of the halfway point in this 20-episode season, ‘Eureka’ is rolling up the sidewalks and saying goodbye until its holiday special this December. The series put a bow on the time-travel story that had dictated much of the plot since the season premiere shifted five of the principal cast members to 1947. As with all good time travel stories, the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. So it was back to the beginning for Carter and Dr. Grant, though the circumstances of their arrival were a little different, and under a situation that would have been heartbreakingly tragic if this wasn’t ‘Eureka.’

Stand Up to Cancer 2010 [special presentation]

Michael C. Hall & Christina Applegate, 'Stand Up to Cancer 2010'Identifier: Benefit Special
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 10, 2010 (8 PM ET)
Network: ABC/CBS/FOX/NBC

After a two-year absence the SU2C came back to television with a prime-time special. This time, they got all four major networks to simulcast the one-hour program, again filling it with celebrities and musical acts to add entertainment value to the benefit aspect of it. The event was certainly star-studded; I lost track of all the celebrities, and was hosted by the three major news anchors: Katie Couric, Brian Williams and Diane Sawyer. Brian Williams even did a little bit of “walking and talking,” though he was clearly uncomfortable with it. Light moments like that, and the music kept the hour from getting too somber, but it was also uplifting in many ways.
