Ratings Recap: ’90210′ and ‘Gossip Girl’ Come Back Soft, CBS Repeats Strong

'Gossip Girl'(for Monday, September 13, 2010) The CW continued their early premieres with ‘Gossip Girl’ and ’90210′ coming in with mixed results; one looking better than last year, and one about even, if not slightly down. CBS had a great final Monday of repeats to give them the night for the last Monday of the summer season.

The Big C, “Playing the Cancer Car”

'The Big C' - 'Playing the Cancer Car'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 4
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (10:30 ET)
Network: Showtime

It looks like Cathy may be starting to turn the corner in her post-diagnosis manic spree of insanity. I don’t think she’s out of the woods yet, but there are some positive signs. And it’s absolutely necessary that she take those steps, because without some self-awareness, some sense of purpose, this show can’t sustain itself. As much fun as it might be to watch someone act like they have no cares in the world, it starts to get old. And as great as it is to watch Laura Linney playing this role with such enthusiastic gusto, she has some real problems she needs to face.

Hoarders, “Carolyn/Jo”

'Hoarders' - 'Carolyn/Jo'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 4
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: A&E

A&E really needs to slow down the pace of these new episodes. At two a week, it’s a lot to take in. Episodes of ‘Hoarders’ really make people stop and think about their own situations, and those around them, and the network shouldn’t be in such a hurry to move onto the next one. I get that these are huge ratings bonanzas for you, A&E, but you don’t want to burn out your audience. I am thankful, though, that we got a more positive note to end the night on thanks to this second episode.

Dating in the Dark, “Harrison, Ray, Shawn, Kahleel, Kayla & Suzanne” [season finale]

'Dating in the Dark' - 'Harrison, Ray, Shawn, Kahleel, Kayla & Suzanne'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 6
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: ABC

They certainly saved the most interesting experiment for last. And while there was a twist going into this episode of ‘Dating in the Dark,’ the twist had virtually no impact on how events turned out. However, for the second or third time we saw one of the women contestants employing treachery to try and win out over another woman when the two are vying for the same guy. We’ve yet to see any men do this, which is interesting. The real question, though, was did it work?

Money Hungry, “This Means War”

'Money Hungry' - 'This Means War'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 7
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: VH1

As a fan of NBC’s weight-loss juggernaut, I really wish VH1′s cheaper cousin was more about the weight loss and less about the game play. Instead, it seems to be all about the money. Each week, these contestants are putting up tiny little numbers, and I’m not seeing anything to tell us they’re making positive changes to their lifestyles. Instead, all their attention is on the grand prize. To give you an idea, after seven weeks one of the contestants leaving the show has lost 22 pounds.

Hoarders, “Robin/Ken”

'Hoarders' - 'Robin/Ken'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 3
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (9:00 PM ET)
Network: A&E

If ‘Hoarders’ ever gets cancelled, A&E should immediately pick up ‘Matt Paxton: Extreme Cleaning Specialist.’ He could even travel with Dr. Zasio, as the pair of them are the most effective aids to these extreme hoarding situations the show keeps finding week after week. This week, they had their hands full on two separate cases. While Dr. Zasio was dealing with one of the more stubborn hoarders we’ve seen yet, Paxton stepped into one of the most disturbing houses ever featured on the show.

MAD, “Trans-Bore-Mores; Groan Wars”

'MAD' - 'Trans-Bore-Mores; Groan Wars'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (8:30 PM ET)
Network: Cartoon Network

Sometimes, an issue of ‘MAD Magazine’ leaves you a little wanting. Especially when it comes to the movie and television parodies. Some shows lend themselves well to satirical takes, while others seem to be more of a struggle. But, just like the magazine it was based on, the beginning and ending parody segments are easily the longest segments in the episode. That means, if they don’t work it can bring the whole show down, and that’s what happened this week.

Regular Show, “Just Set Up Chairs”

'Regular Show' - 'Just Set Up Chairs'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (8:15 PM ET)
Network: Cartoon Network

Clearly, Rigby is the ringleader when it comes to bad behavior. Even when Mordecai tries to do the right thing, and keep Rigby on task, the raccoon just can’t handle it. In fact, his inability to focus on simply setting up chairs for a children’s party was one of the funnier aspects of the episode. Once it got into the expected absurdity, “Just Set Up Chairs” failed to capture that same level of lunatic humor that “The Power” did last week. Or maybe I just wanted more of Pops.

(BootlegTV-UK) The Inbetweeners, “The Fashion Show” [season premiere]

'The Inbetweeners' - 'The Fashion Show'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 1
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010
Network: E4

(What is BootlegTV? To put it simply, sometimes things are available in other parts of the world, but not in the US. That doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed here, though.)

Some things never change. A new school year for Will and the boys, but they’ve brought all their baggage from the previous year with them. Will is still pathetically hung up on Charlotte, while Simon may never be over Carli. She, on the other hand, has a whole new reason to be over him though it’s based on a horrible accident on Simon’s part. Horrible for him, for us and for the audience of the titular fashion show.
