Ratings Recap: Premieres Can’t Touch Finales, But Two Out of Three Improve

Lauren Graham, 'Parenthood'(for Tuesday, September 14, 2010) It was big goodbyes and soft hellos as NBC began their final two nights of both ‘America’s Got Talent’ and ‘Minute to Win It’ to great success. ABC was solid as well wit back-to-back ‘Wipeout’ finale hours. In premiere news, it was good for ‘Parenthood’ and ‘One Tree Hill,’ but not so much for ‘Life Unexpected’ which needs to find some viewers stat!

The investigation is in full swing as to who kidnapped Abel, but now there’s even more on the Sons’ plate. After the shocking shoot-out at the end of last week’s episode, Charming PD is without a Deputy Sheriff, and Opie’s girlfriend has lost her child. The big question is who would do such a thing, and why? And with all the chaos that’s been happening in Charming the past two years, where are the Sons’ heads in all of this. As Jax said when Unser sprung him from the clink, he’s not looking for retaliation. All his energy is focused on finding his son.

'Parenthood' - 'I See You, I Hear You'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: NBC

I don’t know how they did it, but right away, the rhythm and tone of this new season feels just right. Last year, things felt just a little too serious and grim. I know there were serious things going on, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be some levity in life. Without levity we’d go mad. Plus, there’s that whole 1980s film you’re taking the name of. Well, suddenly they’ve got the formula just right.

Recognize that guy over there? Of course you do. That’s Ben Mercer, the guy we’ve been seeing in all those beach-based flashbacks of Annie’s all season. You didn’t think we could get through a season finale without him being involved, did you? In fact, we had Henry back, as well as Auggie’s former reporter girlfriend Liza. It was a veritable reunion for Annie’s mission with the “highest” stakes yet.

Warehouse 13, “Buried”

'Warehouse 13' - 'Buried'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 11
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: Syfy

“One shall die.” These were the words that haunted our agents as they went off to tackle one of their most daunting cases yet. And it was a case that revealed more secrets about the Warehouse than any that have come before it. H.G. Wells was put to the test, and even Regent Valda, who insisted she rejoin the staff, was on hand. Oh, and Pete “won,” for what it’s worth.

Life Unexpected, “Ocean Uncharted” [season premiere]

'Life Unexpected' - 'Ocean Uncharted'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: The CW

Early in the episode, both Kate and Lux got to spend some happy quality time in their underwear, because apparently that’s what the ladies do. That’s right, The CW’s latest guilty pleasure is back, with all the “unexpected” twists and turns we’ve come to … ahem … expect. The magic phrase for this episode was “new faces.” One showed up for Lux, one for Baze, and one for Ryan and Kate, and everywhere a new face showed up, everything changed in the waking of their passing.

Covert Affairs, “I Can’t Quit You, Baby”

'Covert Affairs' - 'I Can't Quit You, Baby'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 10
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: USA

Ah, Gregory Itzin. Still as commanding a screen presence as ever. Itzin returned as Henry, Arthur’s predecessor at the boss’s desk, and he had some sage advice and wisdom to offer. I have some of my own to the networks (I don’t care which one). Someone get this man a regular role on a TV series. He’s simply too talented to waste on guest roles, though I’ll admit to enjoying his appearances around the television landscape. I have a feeling he’ll be back around this water cooler before too long as well.

America’s Got Talent, “The Finals”

'America's Got Talent' - 'The Finals'Identifier: Season 5, Episode 30
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: NBC

I didn’t watch any of this season of ‘America’s Got Talent.’ I’ve never cared for the somewhat arbitrary methods they use to reach the top ten, and for me there are usually more misses than hits. But something happened this season. First, I got all Susan-Boyled over Jackie Evancho, ironically enough on YouTube. And then I stumbled on Fighting Gravity online, which led to me watching the performances of last week’s declared final four and I thought something very unexpected. These four are really good!

Melissa & Joey, “Spies & Lies”

'Melissa & Joey' - 'Spies & Lies'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 6
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (8 PM ET)
Network: ABC Family

The fallout of what Mel’s brother and his wife did looks like it may be a simmering plot bubble just below the surface of the more classic sitcom elements that drive this gentle comedy forward. It was actually kind of appreciated, as it gave a sense of realism to the show filled with audience laughter and every character ready with a quip at a moment’s notice. I like the nostalgic feel of the show as much as the next guy, but I can also appreciate a little more substance to these kinds of guilty pleasures.
