He broke Batman’s robot dinosaur! No one breaks Batman’s robot dinosaur! Actually, Hunter does. I don’t remember Starro having a Herald like Marvel’s Galactus, but that’s just want Hunter called himself. Fans of DC Comics and comics in general should find plenty to enjoy with the return of the most fun Batman series since Adam West wore the tights.
I’ll even give them credit for a surprise ending, as I fully expected Starro to remain the threat throughout this saga. Instead, he was relatively easily dispatched by Billy Batson’s magic lightning. I’m not sure why it was targeting Starro rather than Billy, though. Maybe because Starro had absorbed some of Billy’s life force? Yeah, let’s go with that.
Fans may have noticed Sugar & Spike on the S & S Diapers truck, a nod to a classic all-ages DC comic series, as well as the plethora of DC characters Starro-ed in this one. ‘B&B’ is our gateway into the larger DC Universe, and this cartoon tackles that task with such gusto, it’s hard not to watch these episodes with a big smile on your face.
Over the top characterizations like Aquaman and B’wana Beast show the lighter side of superheroes, while their source comics often take themselves so seriously. I have no idea what Hunter wants with B’wana Beast and his animal-hybrid-making abilities, but I’m sure it won’t be good news. With Starro down, though, it looks like Batman may have his pick of the litter for a partner in the next installment. We saw what he could do with Booster Gold, B’wana Beast, Captain Marvel and Firestorm by his side.
I’m not sure why Cartoon Network kept pushing back this batch of episodes, but this one was worth the wait. Maybe they just wanted the extra attention that the fall season in full swing could bring them.
