As a reader of ‘MAD Magazine,’ I usually found myself less than impressed with most of the movie and television parodies that round out each presentation. The TV show is situated much the same way, and my reaction to ’2012 Dalmations’ was that it was about as yawn-worthy as I remembered from the magazine. However, “Grey’s in Anime,” which wrapped the cartoon was spot-on hilarity.
I loved that it got crazier and crazier as it went on, with nonsensical imagery and words flashing in the background, like you’re on some candy-induced crack high, hallucinating something out of Willy Wonka’s nightmares. Add to that the hilarious caricatures and bits making fun of the likes of ‘Pokemon,’ ‘Yu-Gi-Oh!’ and probably several other anime properties I don’t know, and it was one of the better long segments thus far in the young series.
Most of the shorts this week weren’t that memorable, save the one with penguins messing you up in a dark alley — see told you global warming could lead to all kinds of problems. Carcrashians as a play on Kardashians is so lazy it hurt my eyes to watch the obviousness of the whole sketch play out.
The punch at Haley Joel Osment as a celebrity sibling nobody cares about or wants to see acting was pretty funny. It was consistently half–smile funny and it keeps me nostalgic for the fun days of curling up with the magazine (and yes I know it’s still in publication, though I think it’s down to quarterly now). And as long as it doesn’t take up too much of my time with it’s 12 minute or so of content, and it can be funny for at least a few of those minutes, it’ll probably be worth wasting a few empty moments each week.
