Ratings Recap: It’s the Same Old Song and Dance on Sundays With the New Season

(for Sunday, September 26, 2010) ‘Brothers & Sisters’ proved the most resilient of the returning shows, while the NFL came back down to earth with its ratings; though still very dominant. CBS’s entire premiere lineup was shifted back 17 minutes thanks to their own NFL coverage, making DVR users howl in anguish yet again.

Thanks to ‘Sunday Night Football,’ NBC (5.3/14, 13.478 million) took a commanding lead in the Adults 18-49 demographic, though CBS (3.9/10, 13.269 million) was dangerously close in total viewers thanks to their own football overruns, and solid debuts down their lineup. FOX (3.5/9, 7.603 million) was next in the demo, but dead last in viewers thanks to their notoriously younger-skewing “Animation Domination” lineup, which premiered very well. ABC (2.8/7, 9.102 million) saw mixed results out of its unchanged lineup.

Childrens Hospital, “The End of the Middle”

'Childrens Hospital' - 'The End of the Middle'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 6
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (10:30 PM)
Network: Cartoon Network/Adult Swim

This week we learned that ‘Childrens Hospital’ is a fictional world within a fictional world. These actors are playing actors who are playing the characters we see in the hospital. That means they’re at least twice as talented as most actors on other television shows. Take Megan Mullally who portrays the British Lady Jane Bentick-Smith, the actress who portrays the American character The Chief. An American pretending to do a British person pretending to do an American accent. That’s astounding! And we learned so much more in this special installment of ‘Newsreaders’ looking at the cancellation of ‘Childrens Hospital.’

'Lost Girl' - 'Oh Kappa, My Kappa'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 3
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: Showcase

(What is BootlegTV? To put it simply, sometimes things are available in other parts of the world, but not in the US. That doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed here, though.)

Some fae are much prettier than others. For example, both Bo and Dyson look good rolling around in the hay. The kappa, on the other hand, isn’t nearly so pretty. Bo finds herself face-to-face with one as a result of Kenzi sending out flyers for Bo’s Investigation Services. Who cares that Bo has no experience, the flyer says she has ten years. Who cares that she didn’t ask for this, it’s a perfect way to make things happen. Now we can be a crime procedural, of sorts, with a supernatural twist.

Brothers & Sisters, “The Homecoming” [season premiere]

'Brothers & Sisters' - 'The Homecoming'Identifier: Season 5, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: ABC

The first thing I noticed as we shifted the story ahead by a year was that Justin was noticeably grayer and buffer as he returned from Afghanistan and his third tour of duty. It’s been a year, and now we know what Justin was up to. How about everyone else? Who died in that car accident? Holly? Robert? Both?

Rubicon, “In Whom We Trust”

'Rubicon' - 'In Whom We Trust'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 10
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: AMC

It only took ten episodes, but Will Travers and Katherine Rhumor have finally met. Or is it the first time? And will it be the last time? Doesn’t Will realize that if whoever “they” is is keeping such close tabs on him, they’re going to know he’s met with her. And with the two of them running independent investigations into Atlas-McDowell, the last thing “they” would want would be for the two to compare notes. From a storytelling point of view: it’s about damned time!

Hoarding: Buried Alive, “The Mess I’ve Created”

'Hoarding: Buried Alive' - 'The Mess I've Created'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 8
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: TLC

I think I feel sorriest for the people who love the hoarders. In this episode, we meet two of them. Melissa is the 17-year old daughter of Norine who’s moved in with her Aunt Suellen because of Norine’s horrible hoarding. And then there’s poor Roger, who nearly died while the paramedics tried to figure out how to navigate through his wife’s “treasures” to get to the back room of the house he’s come to call his “castle.” What do you do? You love the person but they’re destroying your home and your life. It’s an impossible situation.

Family Guy, “And Then There Were Fewer” [season premiere]

'Family Guy' - 'And Then There Were Fewer'Identifier: Season 9, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: FOX

… ‘Family Guy’ tackled another popular film with ‘And Then There Were Fewer.’ Inspired by the Agatha Christie novel ‘And Then There Were None’ and subsequent film, it found most of the notable citizens of Quahog sequestered in a huge mansion where they began to be picked off one by one by a mysterious murderer. If this proves to be in continuity, it promises to have the same kind of drastic change on the town as the revelation that Sideshow Bob was a murderer did for ‘The Simpsons.’ Granted, I guess that means the ‘South Park’ adage “Simpsons did it!” applies, but it doesn’t take away from the ambition of the undertaking, nor the fact that they pulled it off rather well.

Boardwalk Empire, “The Ivory Tower”

'Boardwalk Empire' - 'The Ivory Tower'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: HBO

What do you see when you look at that picture? Two lovers embracing? A woman excited to see the man she loves showing up at her place of work, where she’s a stripper? Huh. That’s interesting. I see a mother and son. Yep, Gretchen Mol finally made her appearance and she’s playing Jimmy’s very, very young mother Gillian. That’s just what I needed; another cast member to try and keep straight.

The Cleveland Show, “Harder, Better, Faster, Browner” [season premiere]

'The Cleveland Show' - 'Harder, Better, Faster, Browner'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (8:30 PM)
Network: FOX

… Cleveland Brown had some big guests lined up for his premiere as well, including Kanye West reprising his role as a local aspiring rapper named Kenny West and President “Barry” Obama. But he didn’t go at it with such a big production like his buddy Peter and his friends did. For his own second season premiere, Cleveland stuck pretty much to the same sardonic nostalgia it fostered so well in the first season.

The Amazing Race, “They Don’t Call It the Amazing Race for Nothin’!” [season premiere]

'The Amazing Race' - 'They Don't Call It the Amazing Race for Nothin'!'Identifier: Season 17, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (8:30 PM)
Network: CBS

With a super-sized debut, ‘The Amazing Race’ was back and headed straight to England. They got to do a drive-by of Stonehenge, face off against a horde of angry peasants, try to navigate choppy waters in a turtle shell and see if they can knock down a suit of armor without smashing themselves in the face with a catapulted watermelon. That last one proved problematic for one player.

The hype may have centered around Cory Monteith, Amber Riley and Lea Michele from ‘Glee’ lending their voices to this episode, but their appearances were only cameos. The real music guest was Flight of the Conchords … and Stephen Hawking. The boys of Flight played camp counselors at the Performing Arts Camp Lisa was sent to. She only got this opportunity because Bart got to go with Homer and Krusty to accept Krusty’s Nobel Peace Prize.

'The X-Factor' - 'Bootcamp, Part 2'Identifier: Series 7, Episode 8
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010
Network: ITV1

(What is BootlegTV? To put it simply, sometimes things are available in other parts of the world, but not in the US. That doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed here, though.)

Bootcamp draws to a close and the judges revealed that there would be some changes to the show this season. On a suggestion from Nicole Scherzinger, the Over-25s has been modified to the Over-28s. This served to strengthen the Boys and Girls categories. Then because of the breadth of talent in this group, they announced there would be eight acts going into each of the four judge’s houses, for a total of 32. Things just got bigger.
