Ratings Recap: Britney Brings ‘Glee’ Its Best Ratings Yet, ‘No Ordinary Family’ Off to Solid Start

(for Tuesday, September 28, 2010) ‘The Good Wife’ premiered and it’s as if she never left, while new superhero drama ‘No Ordinary Family’ is off to a good start for ABC. ‘Glee’ hit a new series high with their Britney Spears episode, while later in the night, ‘Running Wilde’ is tanking fast, but perhaps not as fast as ‘Parenthood’ over on NBC.

Thanks to a ‘Glee’-tastic night, FOX (4.2/12, 9.684 million) had a commanding lead in the advertiser-valued Adults 18-49 demographic, while CBS (3.4/9, 16.027 million) rode the power of ‘NCIS’ to the viewers crown. ABC (3.0.8, 12.267 million) with ‘Family’ and ‘Dancing With the Stars’  was next, leaving NBC (2.5/7, 6.372 million) and a deflated ‘Biggest Loser’ to wallow in fourth place. The CW (0.9/2, 1.698 million) just missed a 1.0 in the demo.

Sons of Anarchy, “Home”

'Sons of Anarchy' - 'Home'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 4
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: FX

Hal Holbrook, as Gemma’s father, was just heartbreakingly good in this. Still reeling from what he did with Tig, he was brilliant as a man who knows he’s slipping, but still isn’t ready to accept it completely and have to move into a home. “Take me home,” he pleads with his daughter, and we were all there crying with her. Then to add to that heartache, Gemma decided to get home herself to see her own family. Only …

Parenthood, “I’m Cooler Than You Think”

'Parenthood' - 'I'm Cooler Than You Think'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 3
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: NBC

It was good to see Crosby standing up for himself with Renee, Jasmine’s mother. Sure, he agreed that Jabbar would be better off living at Renee’s house while Jasmine was touring in Europe, but that doesn’t mean he should be treated as a child or some kind of deadbeat dad. Jasmine’s father may have left, but Crosby never did. Renee could have some residual resentment because of the lie Jasmine told in the beginning; that he had run away. Truth is he never knew about Jabbar, and from the moment he found out, he’s been committed to the kid. It’s admirable.

Running Wilde, “Into the Wilde”

'Running Wilde' - 'Into the Wilde'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:30 PM)
Network: FOX

There are sparks of how this could be a great comedy, but it’s just not coming together quite yet. The chemistry between Steve and Emmy isn’t there yet, and Puddle kind of became inconsequential in a hurry this week. As the narrator, I kind of want her more in the middle of things, but Andy (David Cross) was very funny in his interactions with Steve, as well as his brilliant plant to “kidnap” Steve for ransom money.

Stargate Universe, “Intervention, Part 3″ [season premiere]

Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: Syfy

Picking up exactly where we left off from the two-part season finale, there’s a lot going on, and a lot of subtle surprises and twists and turns. But wait, we didn’t leave with TJ back on that planet where they left Cain and a bunch of other survivors, you say. Yeah, what is up with that?

Raising Hope, “Dead Tooth”

'Raising Hope' - 'Dead Tooth'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 2
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: FOX

With this second episode, we’re introduced to Shelly, who should prove an interesting addition to the cast. I’d like to see her get the dead tooth fixed at some point, though it is a “conversation starter” as she described it to Virginia, but it’s incredibly distracting. I like that Kate Micucci is still singing songs, as she often did on ‘Scrubs,’ and tying her to Sabrina helps solidify Sabrina’s role in the show. Particularly since she came bearing a surprise for Jimmy

No Ordinary Family, “Pilot” [series premiere]

'No Ordinary Family' - 'Pilot'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: ABC

The fact that this is an ordinary family is why this pilot worked so well. They wasted no time in establishing the Powell family with their abilities by giving us their origin sequence right away. Then, because they are just normal people living normal lives, we didn’t have any of the flair for the dramatic that ‘Heroes’ did right off the bat. Plus, we learned that they may not be alone.

Melissa & Joey, “Dancing With the Stars of Toledo”

'Melissa & Joey' - 'Dancing With the Stars of Toledo'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 8
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: ABC Family

Lucy DeVito is a fun addition to the cast. The daughter of Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman plays the dippy new legislative assistant to Mel and has so far introduced herself to everyone in both of her appearances. This quirk alone makes her fun and memorable in this very light throwback comedy. But keeping it modern and real, ‘Dancing With the Stars’ professional dancer Mark Ballas was on hand to partner with Mel for a local competition.

Glee, “Britney/Brittany”

'Glee' - 'Britney/Brittany'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 2
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: FOX

I don’t mind stunt casting to draw in viewers, and Britney Spears is certainly a valid choice for a show such as ‘Glee,’ but I don’t like it when it comes at the sacrifice of story. ‘Glee’ works when the drama of its terrific cast is first and foremost. That said, I will give credit where credit is due, and Heather Morris has an incredible physique in her takes on some of Britney’s classics. I dare say that Brittany looks hotter than Britney ever did.

The Biggest Loser, “1 of 16 Eliminated”

'The Biggest Loser' - '1 of 16 Eliminated'Identifier: Season 10, Episode 2
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: NBC

Alison Sweeney promised big changes for this tenth season of ‘The Biggest Loser,’ subtitled ‘Pay It Forward.’ And right off the bat, the show delivered. Two of the contestants who failed to make the show were brought to the Ranch; one each saved by Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. Then, just two days into their stay on The Biggest Loser Ranch, the sixteen contestants were told they’d have to face the scale in the most frightening weigh-in ever conceived for the series.
