How many people who would love to travel and see the seven wonders of the ancient world do you think are being driven mad by Karl Pilkington pissing and moaning all over each and every one of them. This week, he was off to Jordan to see Petra, a city in the mountains. Karl, though, did have a point in that the guy in the cave across the way had a far betterview than the one from inside Petra.
As expected, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant couldn’t just send Karl to the monument and fly him straight back home. Instead, they sent Karl by way of Jerusalem. Karl, not a religious man by nature, had absolutely no idea what was going on with the various rituals people were doing in the Holy City, from praying, kneeling, singing, dancing and even putting bits of paper into cracks in a wall.
Karl got a moment of relaxation when he explored the idea that you can float on the Dead Sea, due to the salt content, but Ricky was having none of that. This is, after all, a travel show. Far better to see that the route Ricky and Stephen planned for Karl through the desert by camel was so brutal, even the camel gave up and said it had had enough.
The funniest meta moment, perhaps, was when Karl declared that he actually enjoyed his night living in a cave, with a family that lives there all the time. Being the caveman that he is, it looked as if Karl had perhaps found someplace he belonged. And we learned that the mail gets delivered everywhere, even in a cave.
As for his thoughts on Petra. He stands by his claim that it’s better to be on the outside looking at it. Just like he’d rather be an ugly person looking at someone beautiful than vice-versa. And Ricky says he’s a buffoon.
