Air Date: Sat., Oct. 9, 2010
Network: ITV1

(What is BootlegTV? To put it simply, sometimes things are available in other parts of the world, but not in the US. That doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed here, though.)

In a new twist this season, and perhaps in response to the level of talent the producers saw, each judge was allowed to add a wild card selection to their category, making a Top 12 into an instant Top 16. That also meant an extra long episode and a ton of performances.

So, how did I do? Nine out of twelve isn’t bad, with my most difficult to pick category being the girls. As it was the strongest category, I’m not going to beat myself up too much over it. The episode was much like “The Chair” episodes in that it just revealed the finalists finding out if they were in or out. In other words, visually boring television, unless you’re emotionally invested in anyone.

I’m wondering if there are aspects of this stage they weren’t showing us. UK viewers have been doing this for seven years so they know the format. I didn’t see anything other than a single performance by the contesants in front of the judges, but I’d like to believe there was a lot of work, practice and mentoring that went on in the houses before that point. Otherwise, why fly them to these houses at all and have them work with specific judges?

Bootcamp draws to a close and the judges revealed that there would be some changes to the show this season. On a suggestion from Nicole Scherzinger, the Over-25s has been modified to the Over-28s. This served to strengthen the Boys and Girls categories. Then because of the breadth of talent in this group, they announced there would be eight acts going into each of the four judge’s houses, for a total of 32. Things just got bigger.

With the audition rounds behind us, it’s time to really start seeing how this show differs from its predecessor and the basis of our own ‘American Idol.’ After all, this show will be here next year. Like “Hollywood Week,” “Bootcamp” brings the selected contestants to Wembley Arena in London so the process of sorting down to the Top 12 can begin. And sorting begins by dividing them into categories.

The audition rounds wrapped with a second night in Manchester, and with Nicole Scherzinger still sitting in for Cheryl Cole. Reportedly, she’ll be filling in through the Bootcamp portion of the show as well which is fine as she was very capable and engaging in this process. Not to mention that she’s quite possibly the hottest woman on the planet. Louis Walsh was certainly appreciating her assets when a performance got her on her feet.

For the final weekend of the auditions rounds ‘The X-Factor’ is doubling up, with two episodes this weekend. I have a feeling when it comes to FOX it’ll be two episodes every week, like with ‘American Idol.’ I decided to pick up this season of ‘The X-Factor’ to get an idea of how it’s formatted differently than ‘AI,’ and to get my Simon Cowell fix for the year. Next fall, he’ll be on FOX with this one.
