December 2011 Premieres, Specials & Events

I know there hasn’t been much happening on this site in a long while and for that I’m sorry. It’s been a struggle figuring out how to better balance my new responsibilities in the day job with the extracurricular activities I want to do, like this site and some other exciting things to come in 2012.

But people who know me know that I love me a good list, and I love me some television, so why not take what I do anyway for myself and share it all with you. Many of you may remember these monthly columns from TV Squad and subsequently AOL TV. Well, they’ve proven pretty popular and I’ve seen them copied countless places on the ‘net, so why not on my own site. I did put in the man-hours to create it after all :).

Haven, “Spiral” [season finale]

'Haven' - 'Spiral'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 13
Air Date: Fri., Oct. 8, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: Syfy

Well, that answers that question. Would ‘Haven’ go out with a sense of closure or would they leave us dangling with a million more questions than we even knew we had. It looks like the writers would rather tantalize us about next season, and that’s fine by me. Max Hansen returns from Shawshank Redemption after serving 25 year, and his presence stirs up a lot of questions, and … well more questions.

Money Hungry, “The Ultimate Weigh-In” [season finale]

Identifier: Season 1, Episode 10
Air Date: Fri., Oct. 4, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: VH1

Gameplay dominated the season for Mission: Slimpossible, and they kept that mentality alive through to the finale. Grading Curves and The Regulators weren’t immune, but those teams also committed themselves to the work ethic required to win. Add to that their desires to improve their lives with the cash prize, in comparison to Slimpossible wanting to blow it all in Vegas, and its easy to pick who to root for and who to root against.

Hoarding: Buried Alive, “This Is Where You Sleep?” [season finale]

Identifier: Season 2, Episode 9
Air Date: Sun., Oct. 3, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: TLC

Two different tragedies created two different hoarders out of two moms in this season finale. Neither of them was as disturbing as some of the ones we’ve seen, and both had solid support systems in place to help them get better. In fact, the love of daughter Erin toward her afflicted mother, Debbie, was perhaps the strongest level of unconditional love and support we’ve yet seen.

Warehouse 13, “Reset” [season finale]

'Warehouse 13' - 'Reset'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 12
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 21, 2010 (9:00 ET)
Network: Syfy

After the great climax of the penulimate episode of the season, I was expecting a lot more than what I ultimately got this week. I think the writers took the title a little too literally as it seems that all the intrigue and creative ideas that had been thrown at us this past season were just cast aside so we can come back fresh next season. Except for one big change, which kind of isn’t either.

The Gates, “Moving Day” [season finale]

'The Gates' - 'Moving Day'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 13
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 19, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: ABC

Well, that’s one way to leave us hanging by a thread. The relationship of Andie and Charlie took center stage, with devastating results for all involved. What it all means and what happens next is something we may never find out, as ‘The Gates’ was a modest summer performer for ABC at best and may not get a season renewal. I could see it going Syfy or to another network, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Being Human, “(Episode 8)” [season finale]

'Being Human' - 'Episode 8'Identifier: Series 2, Episode 8
Air Date: Sat., Sep. 18, 2010 (9 PM ET)
Network: BBC America

So much for happy endings. Everything comes full circle as far as characters goes by the end of this one, but first there’s that whole situation going down at the facility Lucy has lured Nina and George to. I spent most of the season trying to decide who was worse: Lucy or Kemp, but now I know for sure. Would all three of our protagonists make it to the end of this one? And if they do, will they still be themselves? Mitchell certainly wasn’t at the start of the hour.

Covert Affairs, “When the Levee Breaks” [season finale]

'Covert Affairs' - 'When the Levee Breaks'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 11
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 14, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: USA

Recognize that guy over there? Of course you do. That’s Ben Mercer, the guy we’ve been seeing in all those beach-based flashbacks of Annie’s all season. You didn’t think we could get through a season finale without him being involved, did you? In fact, we had Henry back, as well as Auggie’s former reporter girlfriend Liza. It was a veritable reunion for Annie’s mission with the “highest” stakes yet.

Dating in the Dark, “Harrison, Ray, Shawn, Kahleel, Kayla & Suzanne” [season finale]

'Dating in the Dark' - 'Harrison, Ray, Shawn, Kahleel, Kayla & Suzanne'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 6
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 13, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: ABC

They certainly saved the most interesting experiment for last. And while there was a twist going into this episode of ‘Dating in the Dark,’ the twist had virtually no impact on how events turned out. However, for the second or third time we saw one of the women contestants employing treachery to try and win out over another woman when the two are vying for the same guy. We’ve yet to see any men do this, which is interesting. The real question, though, was did it work?

Hung, “‘Even Steven’ or ‘Luckiest Kid in Detroit’” [season finale]

'Hung' - ''Even Steven' or 'Luckiest Kid in Detroit''Identifier: Season 2, Episode 10
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 12, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: HBO

Even the episode title tells us this show is as much about Jessica’s journey as it’s been about Ray and Tanya and Happiness Consultants. Anne Heche is such an integral part of this story, and whether or not she and Ray have any sort of future, the show wouldn’t be nearly as compelling. The ‘Hung’ in the title refers to Ray’s feelings for Jessica as well as what he’s sporting down below. He’s never gotten over her. He’s hung up on his ex-wife, the house he grew up in and even his past glories. But tonight, he may be starting to put the past behind him and actually see the future for what it is: endless possibilities.

Rookie Blue, “Takedown” [season finale]

'Rookie Blue' - 'Takedown'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 13
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 9, 2010 (10 PM ET)
Network: ABC

Cop uniforms aren’t sexy. Missy Peregrym is. It was only a matter of time before the producers of this show got her into much less clothing so her assets could be appreciated. Historically, this has helped in the ratings, as ‘Ghost Whisperer’ found itself doing much better as soon as Jennifer Love Hewitt started wearing lower cut tops all the time, and skimpier sleepwear. I’m not saying I think it would serve the show best to have Andy running around in a bra or bikini all the time, but the show has elements of soap opera and sex, and sex appeal is a part of that, so why not work with what you have if you have someone as beautiful as Peregrym as your lead? As for the episode, I went into this finale with a sense of foreboding. Would this be that kind of show?

Obsessed, “Phillip/Kerrie” [season finale]

'Obsessed' - 'Phillip/Kerrie'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 10
Air Date: Mon., Sep. 6, 2010 (11 PM ET)
Network: A&E

Man, after all those episodes of ‘Hoarding: Buried: Alive’ and ‘Hoarders,’ it’s nice to get back to some good old-fashioned OCD. Maybe I should start looking at why I’m so “obsesssed” with these shows, so to speak. But then again, I think we all have some elements of OCD in us. Rituals we do to make ourselves feel better when we fell out of control. It’s just when those rituals take over and we lose control that it becomes a problem. This week, it was all about cleanliness, with two levels of severity.

Durham County, “Life in the Doll House” [season finale]

Laurence LeBoeuf(Season 1, Episode 6)

The ending of the first season, and the Ray Prager storyline, didn’t have as much punch as I expected, though there were plenty of punches thrown. I think, too, that I wanted some follow-up with everyone who doubted Mike’s claims that Ray was the guy behind all of this.

Not to mention the other serial killer. I guess some cases are more complicated than they appear on the surface. And I guess that’s more realistic the way things were presented here, but as an American I think we want to see Mike get a little more gloating time. Continue reading

Skins, “Finale” [season finale]

Skins, "Finale"(Season 3, Episode 10)

Everyone was wrong. I was told from the beginning that by the end of the season, I would come to appreciate Cook. About the only thing that’s changed is that maybe I feel a little more sorry for him … but only a little.

I thought we’d get to check in on everyone for the season finale, but that wasn’t the case at all. Instead we got the story of Freddie and JJ deciding that they needed to reunite the “Three Musketeers.” Which means an episode focusing entirely on Cook, Effy and the two boys. Continue reading

Leverage: The Lost Heir Job [summer finale]

Jeri Ryan(Season 2, Episode 10)

In the opening scene, Ruth’s face make-up was much yellower than her neck and chest. Maybe only noticeable in HD? Regardless, I found it incredibly distracting. Don’t they watch these things back before they go to air?

Jeri Ryan, on the other hand, looked fabulous! Usually I’m all for some new blood to spice up a show’s dynamic, but the moment Ryan stepped out of her car and faced the team, I realized I didn’t want her there. This team works so well together, both as an acting ensemble and as a vigilante crew, that you don’t want to see anyone in there gumming up the works.

And hot as she is, she’s no Sophie Devereaux. Continue reading
