December 2011 Premieres, Specials & Events

I know there hasn’t been much happening on this site in a long while and for that I’m sorry. It’s been a struggle figuring out how to better balance my new responsibilities in the day job with the extracurricular activities I want to do, like this site and some other exciting things to come in 2012.

But people who know me know that I love me a good list, and I love me some television, so why not take what I do anyway for myself and share it all with you. Many of you may remember these monthly columns from TV Squad and subsequently AOL TV. Well, they’ve proven pretty popular and I’ve seen them copied countless places on the ‘net, so why not on my own site. I did put in the man-hours to create it after all :).

Sanctuary, “Kali, Part 3″ [season premiere]

'Sanctuary' - 'Kali, Part 3'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 1
Air Date: Fri., Oct. 15, 2010 (10:00 PM)
Network: Syfy

So what’s in store for the third season of ‘Sanctuary’? Who the hell knows, we’ve got a three-parter to get through first. We’ll save what’s to come for next week. For now, Will’s on the verge of death, Bertha sent a massive tidal wave toward the Sanctuary ship, and well … Wexford is a jackass. But we knew all of that before. The question is how to survive it.

American Dad, “100 A.D., Part 1″ [season premiere]

'American Dad' - '100 A.D., Part 1'Identifier: Season 6, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Oct. 3, 2010 (9:30 PM)
Network: FOX

…Unlike ‘Family Guy,’ ‘American Dad’ never really developed a huge supporting cast, and certainly none of MacFarlane’s shows have created an entire town with the depth of characters as ‘The Simpsons,’ but for ‘American Dad’ it kind of works. For all their excessive and outlandish behavior, they’re a rather self-absorbed bunch, which means they’re not out making meaningful connections with other people in their community. Thus, when a bus crashes and kills 96 of them, who’s really going to notice?

Stargate Universe, “Intervention, Part 3″ [season premiere]

Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Tue., Sep. 28, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: Syfy

Picking up exactly where we left off from the two-part season finale, there’s a lot going on, and a lot of subtle surprises and twists and turns. But wait, we didn’t leave with TJ back on that planet where they left Cain and a bunch of other survivors, you say. Yeah, what is up with that?

The Amazing Race, “They Don’t Call It the Amazing Race for Nothin’!” [season premiere]

'The Amazing Race' - 'They Don't Call It the Amazing Race for Nothin'!'Identifier: Season 17, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (8:30 PM)
Network: CBS

With a super-sized debut, ‘The Amazing Race’ was back and headed straight to England. They got to do a drive-by of Stonehenge, face off against a horde of angry peasants, try to navigate choppy waters in a turtle shell and see if they can knock down a suit of armor without smashing themselves in the face with a catapulted watermelon. That last one proved problematic for one player.

The Simpsons, “Elementary School Musical” [season premiere]

'The Simpsons' - 'Elementary School Musical'Identifier: Season 22, Episode 1
Air Date: Sun., Sep. 26, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: FOX

The hype may have centered around Cory Monteith, Amber Riley and Lea Michele from ‘Glee’ lending their voices to this episode, but their appearances were only cameos. The real music guest was Flight of the Conchords … and Stephen Hawking. The boys of Flight played camp counselors at the Performing Arts Camp Lisa was sent to. She only got this opportunity because Bart got to go with Homer and Krusty to accept Krusty’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Saturday Night Live, “Amy Poehler/Katy Perry” [season premiere]

'Saturday Night Live' - 'Amy Poehler/Katy Perry'Identifier: Season 36, Episode 1
Air Date: Sat., Sep. 25, 2010 (11:30 PM)
Network: NBC

Of course, the biggest thing of note going into the premiere was the decision by ‘Sesame Street’ to pull a sketch featuring Katy Perry with Elmo because her boobs were too bouncy and it might traumatize young children. So older children got to see just how powerful their bounce was in a sketch where Perry played a 16-year old student who developed over the summer, to the shock of the people down at the library where she reads to children.

Supernatural, “Exile on Main Street” [season premiere]

'Supernatural' - 'Exile on Main Street'Identifier: Season 6, Episode 1
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 24, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: The CW

That premiere felt all kinds of ‘Twilight Zone.’ With the Apocalypse over, it’s back to the nasties of the week … well, we never really left them altogether, I guess. But this time the boys will have some help in fighting the nasties, and it’s some help from some pretty unexpected sources. You can always trust family, right? Um…

Smallville, “Lazarus” [season premiere]

'Smallville' - 'Lazarus'Identifier: Season 10, Episode 1
Air Date: Fri., Sep. 24, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: The CW

From Batman to Superman. Well not Superman yet. It’s been ten seasons, guys. Can’t we– At least we’re getting closer. Clark introduced this as the final season, so they can’t tack any more on. And we’ve come full circle. Just look at that image of Lois up there. Look familiar? Only Clark wasn’t wearing a shirt when it was done to him. I demand fair treatment for both of these characters. Why should Lois have to wear a shirt. Oh, and did I mention Lex did this to her!

The Office, “Nepotism” [season premiere]

'The Office' - 'Nepotism'Identifier: Season 7, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 23, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: NBC

I have on idea what the point of having Michael’s nephew Luke (Evan Peters) here for this season premiere as he was a distraction from the regular interactions that we know and love, and I think we needed to spend time with our regular cast. The spanking, however, was classic Michael and well-deserved. The opening Internet video was goofy, but completely appropriate. After all these years, they’re starting to rub off on Stanley, as he actually participated; even if it was just holding the door open for the cameraman.

Fringe, “Olivia” [season premiere]

'Fringe' - 'Olivia'Identifier: Season 3, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 23, 2010 (9:00 PM)
Network: FOX

Last year, the Fringe Division took their first foray into the alternate universe Walter had visited many years before, when he essentially kidnapped Peter from his home reality. While there, the team encountered alternate versions of themselves, and while they did make it back home, it was with the wrong Olivia Dunham. So now “Over There” Olivia is in the “Over Here” universe, and vice-versa. All of a sudden, fans have a vested interest in knowing intimately what’s going on in both universes, and the show’s creators have come up with a crazy, but fun, way of doing it.

My Generation, “Pilot” [series premiere]

'My Generation' - 'Pilot'Identifier: Season 1, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 23, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: ABC

The idea of a show following a bunch of 2000 high school graduates in their lives ten years later does have potential. The country was in such a different place in 2000 than it is now, it could make for a compelling look at how youthful idealism turned into late 20s reality. Instead, we got this.

Community, “Anthropology 101″ [season premiere]

'Community' - 'Anthropology 101'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 23, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: NBC

The transition into a new shared class this season was handled seamlessly, complete with new teacher June Bauer, played by Betty White. We may be on a bit of a White overload, so her presence can’t do much to stem the avalanche of destruction coming ‘Community’s way now that CBS is airing ‘The Big Bang Theory’ opposite it. The show could have used some of the energy and pizazz Abed was looking for in the second season, but instead it spent the episode trying to resolve the Jeff-Britta-Annie triangle they wrapped last season on.

The Big Bang Theory, “The Robotic Manipulation” [season premiere]

'The Big Bang Theory' - 'The Robotic Manipulation'Identifier: Season 4, Episode 1
Air Date: Thu., Sep. 23, 2010 (8:00 PM)
Network: CBS

If I were Penny, I’d probably start thinking about moving. Though now that she’s an accepted, if reluctantly, part of Sheldon’s life routine, he might find it difficult to let her go. Plus, thanks to Penny, Sheldon’s a lot more human than he used to be. He actually uses courtesies and expresses concern for others feelings. But, as we saw on his first date … period … he still has a long way to go.

Modern Family, “The Old Wagon” [season premiere]

'Modern Family' - 'The Old Wagon'Identifier: Season 2, Episode 1
Air Date: Wed., Sep. 22, 2010 (9:00 ET)
Network: ABC

I love this show so much! Can they just not take the summers off and bring me new episodes every week. While ‘Glee’ felt just a little off from its winning formula with its sophomore debut, ‘Modern Family’ was every bit as brilliant and sharp as it was throughout last season. This premiere brought laughs and heart from every part of the family, as well as a new catchphrase for the Dunphy family: “What’s the plan, Phil!” While it was used very specifically here, it certainly could apply to any number of situations, and the kids have already glommed onto it.
